THE DAY AT SHERMAN
YOUNG MAN DROWNED

Lost Life in Choctaw Creek While Using a Seine
Sherman, Texas, May 9 - Ernest, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Green Martin, who reside 3 miles south of Luella, about 16 or 17 years of age, was drowned yesterday afternoon about 6 o'clock in Choctaw Creek just about the place known as Hogskin Crossing, about 5 miles southeast of Sherman.
The young man with several companions was engaged in seining.  The water was not deep and young Martin was wading the stream hauling the seine.  Suddenly he stepped into a hole that was beyond his depth and was carried from his feet by the current.  He was not able to swim and at once became frightened.  Two of his companions realizing his plight went to his assistance but in drowning the boy's exertions to save himself imperiled his companions.  Both of them were pulled under by Martin's desperate attempts to save himself and the two rescurers were compelled to leave the young man to his fate in order to save themselves from drowning.
An hour after Martin went down for the last time, his body was recovered from the creek.  The remains were taken to the home of the unfortunate man's parents, where the funeral was held this afternoon.
