Joseph
M. Franklin, 79, retired Cedar community farmer, died at a local
hospital Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. following an illness of 4 weeks. He was
a native of Fairmount, Gordon County, Georgia and had lived at Sherman,
Grayson County, Texas for 48 years. Funeral services were held at the Waldo Funeral Chapel Wednesday; Rev. C.J. Graves conducted the service. Pallbearers were Sam Franklin, Ernest Franklin, Lloyd Franklin, B. Cook, and B.E. Perkins. Burial was in Holloway Cemetery. Mr. Joseph M. Franklin was born February 16, 1869, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Washington Franklin and Mary Ann Elizabeth Presley. He was married to Miss Nancy Evelyn Griffin January 8, 1900. She died September 6, 1947. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include 2 sons, Elmer Melton Franklin of Sherman and Frank Gaston Franklin of La Port, Texas; 3 daughters, Mrs. J.T. Stephenson of Sherman; Mrs. R.A. Stephenson of Bells; and Mrs. R.W. Fogle of Sherman; 2 sisters, Mrs. T.O. Cook of Ft. Officiating were Rev. W. Raymond Corrigan and Rev. Dick Thornton. Pallbearers were Claude Lackey, Elliott Thomas, Max Taylor, Carol Pennell, J.W. Pennell and Morris Franklin. Burial was in Holloway Cemetery. Mr. Pennell, native of Tom Bean, was the son of the late J.H. Pennell. He was a member of the Baptist church and was engaged in farming. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Birdie Franklin Pennell; his mother, Mrs. Alice Frisby Pennell of Tom Bean; one daughter, Mrs. Clyde Brown of Whitewright; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
