Uncle
John Hendricks died quite suddenly at his home in the country, halfway
between Denison and Sherman. He was in his 93rd year, and was probably
the eldest pioneer in Grayson County. In company with his family, he
crossed Red River only two days after the state was admitted into the
Union in 1843 and has resided on the present homestead continuously
since that date. He was one of three commissioners appointed by the
legislature to lay out and define the boundaries of Grayson County.
Living in Denison and the surrounding country are 135 of his
descendants, and among whom are children in the 5th generation. He was
a remarkable man in many respects and was strongly attached to the old
order of things. The Central railroad passes through his farm, and
although he had been accustomed to seeing the cars pass for many years,
he took his first railroad trip last summer.
