Delbert D. Hughes 6 March 1928 - 23 May 1982 Ronald "Ronnie" Wayne Hughes of Pottsboro, Texas passed away peacefully on Friday, July 15, 2022 at Texoma Medical Center surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with cancer. Ronnie was born on November 27, 1947 in Denison, Texas, son of Delbert and Norma Jean Hughes. Ronnie graduated from Denison High School, Class of 1966 and was in the Top 10 of his class. He attended Grayson County College from 1966-1968 and received his Associates Degree. While attending Grayson, he worked at Main Street Lumber in Denison. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. When he returned from Vietnam, he returned to work at Main Street Lumber. In 1972 he began his 37 years career with the Denison Fire Department as an EMT/Firefighter/Engineer. His favorite part of his job was driving the fire truck and fighting fire. He retired in 2009. Ronnie was a member of the VFW Post 7873. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid hunter and outdoors man. He looked forward to having his yearly garden and sharing it with his family and friends. He was known for his special batch of trail mix and his pickled vegetables that he made year-round and hand delivered. He loved a good joke and always had a new one to share. Ronnie was a big fan of naps, especially after a holiday meal. Ronnie is survived by his mother, Norman Jean Hughes; sisters, Brenda Christman; Donna White and husband, Jim; Lou Ann Walson and husband, Randy; brother-in-law, Roy Garrett; and his special uncle, Bob Shires; nieces: Amy Householder and husband, Jeff; Sunny Jackey and husband, Nick; Jessica McKinney and husband, Josh; Emily Perkins; nephew: Aaron Walson and wife, Lacy. He had 22 great-nephews, 6 great-nieces and 1 great-great-nephew and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Delbert Hughes; grandparents, Howard and Opal Shires and Lonnie and Lena Hughes; brother-in-law, Jim Christman. Funeral services were held Thursday morning, July 21, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Pottsboro with his cousin, David P. Gibson officiating. Interment followed at Georgetown Cemetery in Pottsboro, Texas. Pallbearers were Roy Garrett, Billy Mullens, Jimmy Mullican, Larry Townsend, Paul Walton, Mike Winnett. He was proud to serve with these and all the members of the Denison Fire Department during his career. Jean Hughes of Pottsboro, Texas, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 13, 2023 at Texoma Medical Center surrounded by her family. Jean was born on November 9, 1929 in Hagerman, Texas, daughter of Howard and Opal Seat Shires. Jean grew up in Hagerman and graduated from Denison High School. She married Delbert Hughes on March 1, 1947. They worked together at Lingo Leeper Hardware Store in Pottsboro, where he was the manager and she was the bookkeeper. In 1964 she was the second employee hired at the original Sears store in Sherman. Jean worked in the Auditing Department and was the Manager for the Catalog Department. She retired in 1991. Her early retirement allowed her to travel from Boston to Las Vegas and many places in between with her sisters several times. There were also many shopping trips, vacations and parades with her son and daughters and their families. Jean was a member of First Baptist Church of Pottsboro. She enjoyed working on genealogy and sharing that history with others. She also loved telling stories about the history of Hagerman and the Katy Railroad as her family roots ran deep in both. She loved spending time with her family. Jean is survived by her daughters: Brenda Garrett Christman; Donna White and husband, Jim; Lou Ann Walson and husband, Randy; son-in-law, Roy Garrett; brother, Bob Shires and wife, Pat; granddaughters: Amy Householder and husband, Jeff; Sunny Mackey and husband, Nick; Jessica McKinney and husband, Josh; Emily Perkins; grandson: Aaron Walson and wife, Lacy. She also had 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Ronnie Hughes; parents; sisters, Johnnie Gibson and husband, Bill; Dorothy Scibek and husband, John; Beverly Gastineau; and infant sister, Barbara Shires; brother, Joe Shires; and son-in-law, Jim Christman Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, February 18, 2023 at Fisher Funeral Home with her nephew, David P. Gibson officiating and music by Wade Kilgore. Interment followed at Georgetown Cemetery in Pottsboro, Texas. Pallbearers were Roy Garrett, Jeff Householder, Nick Mackey, Josh McKinney, Shawn Ramsey and Aaron Walson. Honorary pallbearers were Randy Walson and Jim White.
