JOEL HAWKINS 1878 - 1890 Dallas Morning News 9 September 1890 A LITTLE BOY KILLED Sherman, Tex., Sept. 8 - Saturday afternoon a farmer by the name of Hawkins, who lives near Basin Springs, in this county, in company with his son, Joel Hawkins, a lad of 12 years, drove over to the flowing wells with quite a quantity of fresh beef, which he wished to sell to the various campers who have been located near the wells, which have developed into a health resort. Arriving at the place the farmer left his son in charge of the team while he went down to consummate a trade. He had scarcely gotten to the camps when he heard a commotion in the vicinity where he had left the team, and hurrying back was just in time to catch sight of the frightened team dashing off down the road while in the dust horribly bruised and bleeding from a number of cuts was his son. He lost no time in going to his assistance, but the persistene efforts of all were to no avail as the little fellow was already in the throes of death and died within a few minutes. It is the supposition that the team became frightened at some object and, starting away suddenly, threw the unfortunate boy under the wheels, which left several marks of the iron tires upon his person. The remains were interred in the old Georgetown cemetery yesterday. The accident occurred about eighteen miles from the city. Georgetown Cemetery Susan Hawkins © 2024 Grayson County TXGenWeb |
