Fort Worth
Daily Gazette Friday, February 19, 1886 Our community was shocked at an early hour this morning by hearing of the death of Mrs. Nannie E. Bennett, wife of W.C. Bennett, one of our leading merchants and one of the firm of Bennett & Leatherwood. Mrs. Bennett complained in the evening of a pain in her breast in the region of the heart. Her husband was summoned, and when he arrived at the residence, he called in Dr. Gardner, who prescribed for her and left, thinking the patient was not dangerous. The pain continued to increase at times, although she had relief at short intervals, until finally the family thought she was dangerous, when all of our town physicians were summoned. Doctors Gardner, Cary and Parrish arrived at the house, but too late to do any good, for death had entered the household and done its sad work. She died a few minutes after 12 am., and Doctors Cary and Parrish pronounced the disease to be aneurism of the aorta. Dr. Gardner pronounced it angina pectoris, but could not determine positively due to the absence of a post mortem examination. Mrs. Bennett was one of our earliest settlers. She was a consistent member of the M.E. Church from early childhood and leaves a devoted husband and five sorrowing children. She was one of the members that organized the M.E. Church at this place and took a deep interest in the Sabbath schools. She was a devoted teacher and was always present. About 3 years ago Mr. W.C. Bennett removed to Lamar county and in one year lost his daughter, Miss Etta Bennett, a bright and shining light. Mrs. Bennett always claimed Pottsboro as her home, and insisted on her husband removing here, which he did, and engaged in the mercantile business. She leaves 3 brothers, James A. Potts, Robert Potts and H. F. Potts (formerly of Gainesville), and one sister, Miss Ellen Potts, besides numerous relatives in and around Pottsboro. Mrs. Bennett was 38 years old. She was buried at the Georgetown graveyard by the side of her daughter, on the 19th of February, 1886. Funeral services at the M. E. Church at 1 pm., were conducted by Rev. J. E. Vinson, assisted by Rev. W. M. Leatherwood. Georgetown Cemetery Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
