Pottsboro Woman Born in Covered Wagon, Dies at 72

Texas, December 15 - Mrs. Belle Clement, 72, born in a covered wagon
during her parents' journey to Texas from Independence, Missouri, died
at her home at Pottsboro where the familysettled in 1866. Funeral
services were held Friday afternoon. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Daniel, she was married in 1883 to Isaac Clement, Mayor of Pottsboro,
when the first Red River Valley Fair was held there. He died in
1928. Surviving are 2 sons, R.F. and Owen Clement of Pottsboro; 2
daughters, Mrs. Reed Jones of Denison and Mrs. Houston Loughmiller of
Parsons, Kansas; 3 brothers, Robert Daniel of Plainview; Sweet Daniel
of Abernathy; and Albert Daniel of Denison; a sister, Mrs. Louise
Crabtree of Hagerman and 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Belle Clement Denison
- Mrs. Belle Clement, 72, lifelong resident of the Pottsboro community,
died at her home at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday after a year's illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the
residence, with the Rev. Kirk Beard of Wichita Falls and the Rev. A.H.
Logan of Pottsboro officiating. Burial will be in Georgetown
cemetery, directed by Short and Murray. Mrs.
Clement had lived in Texas all the 72 years of her life. She was
born in a covered wagon, drawn by oxen, as her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Daniels, were enroute to the Lone Star state from Independence,
Mo., on July 25, 1866. She was reared near Pottsboro and was
married in 1883 to Issac Clement, who was mayor of Pottsboro and was in
charge of the first Red River Valley fair, held at Pottsboro. Mr.
Clement died Nov. 20, 1929. Surviving
are four of five children, R.F. and Owen Clement of Pottsboro, Mrs.
R.W. Jones of Denison and Mrs. S.H. Loughmiller of Parsons, Kas.; three
brothers, Robert Daniel of Plainview, S. Daniel of Abernathy and Albert
Daniel of Denison; a sister, Mrs. Louisa Crabtree of Hagerman; 18
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Clement was a member of the Presbyterian church. Her hobbies were fishing and playing 42. |
