January 2004 Lela Mae Wilson, 91, was born to parents Barrett White and Lou Allie Talley of Sadler, Texas. She had 2 sisters, Evelyn Phipps of Sherman, Texas and Clara Lois Wood of Pottsboro, Texas. Lela Mae worked as a teacher until she married Jesse Bryan Wilson, a cattle driver, on February 25, 1938. They had 5 children: Tommy Ross, Lavada Irene, John Martin, Steve Windell and Jess Dwayne. Following her husband's death in 1958, Lela Mae moved to California to ensure her children would have an opportunity to go to college. In Hanford, she worked as a nurse's aide while she went to school to become a licensed Vocational Nurse. She worked as a LVN until her retirement in 1977. Lela Mae was a strong, independent and self-sufficient woman. She was intelligent and an avid reader. She crocheted, knitted, and entered her work in county fairs where she received many awards. She also loved playing the piano and performed at church and at Senior Citizens Village services. She loved going to gospel music programs. Her faith in Jesus Christ was very important to her and was a belief she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Her husband, Jesse Wilson; her sisters, Evelyn Phipps and Clara Lois Wood; her nephew, Waford Phipps; and her granddaughter, Sheila Gordon, preceded her in death. Lela Mae is survived by her children: Tommy and wife, Virginia; John and wife, Nola; Windell and wife, Debbie; Dwayne and wife, Diane; and Lavada Bailey and husband, Harlan; her grandchildren: Roselyn Muzzy; Rebecca Nunez; Michael Bailey; Cheri Halvorson; Cindy Cameron; Kathy Gipson; Carey Wilson; Jeff Wilson; Joseph Wilson; Joseph Wilson; and Tammie Hutton; her nieces, Maudie Vessels and Nelda Bauer; her nephew, Alfred Wood; and 15 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Tuesday afternoon, January 13, 2004 at the Lisle Funeral Chapel. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Center, Fresno, California.
