Sunday, May 8, 1892 pg. 4 Denison Public Schools First Annual Report of the Trustees to the City Council ...The erection of three additional school houses in the city rendered it proper, if not necessary, to give to the respective buildings a name by which they may be distinguished. Many names were considered in this connection, but it was thought proper, after due deliberation, to designate them by the following names: The building on Main street between Barrett and Armstrong avenues - The Washington School. The building at the corner of of Morton Street and Sixth avenue, in the First Ward, the Raynal School, in memory of Justin Raynal, deceased, whose munificent gift to the public schools of Denison can never be forgotten by our people. The building at the corner of Morton street and Sixth avenue, in the First Ward, the Stevens School, in honor of Hon. Robert S. Stevens, who may justly be called the father of Denison. The building at the corner of Johnson street and Armstrong avenue, in the Second Ward, the Burleson School, in honor of Dr. Rufus C. Burleson, the distinguished Texas educator, whose early interest in our schools was instrumental in obtaining for them the benefit of the Peabody fund at a time when they were much in need of it. The building at the corner of Morgan street and Tone avenue, in the Third Ward, the Houston School. The building at the corner of Monterey street and Rusk avenue, in the Third Ward, the Peabody School, in honor of George Peabody, the philanthropist. The building at the corner of Munson street and Houston avenue, the Lamar school. While the foregoing names will serve to distinguish the respective schools above mentioned they will, at the same time, engender patriotic sentiments in the hearts of the children.... The number of pupils enrolled during the second term of the present session is as follows: White schools ~ 1443 Colored schools ~ 380 Total ~ 1823 Washington School History Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson CountyTXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
