Sunday Morning, June 25, 1972 DENISON EARLY WITH ITS FIRST NEGRO SCHOOLS Denison opened its first Negro public school in 1874, less than two years after the town was established. Langston School, located in a brick building at Nelson and Travis, was followed by four other public schools for Negroes. The last, Terrell School, was closed in 1967 when the local school system was totally integrated. In 1874 the Langston School had 35 children enrolled in grades one through six with Dave Walton as their first principal. The school names for Oberlin College professor, John M. Langston, was later condemned and students attended classes at old Raynal while it was being rebuilt. After integration occurred, Langston was sold and used for storage by a construction company.
