The Whitewright Sun Thursday, April 7, 1955 pg.2 LOCAL NEGRO SCHOOL WINS COUNTY MEET The colored schools of Grayson County of the "C" class held their county meet Friday, April 1. All of the six schools were present. Two trophies were given to the two school earning the highest number of points in all events held. Whitewright Elementary School earned the greatest number of points in all events held and as a result was awarded the trophy for being the best all around school. The trophy won from the literary events only was the Maribelle school of Blue Creek, Mrs. Clara Coleman, principal teacher. The next school in all events was the Washington Elementary School of Van Alstyne, Mrs. Albert Hill, principal teacher. All of the schools had many pupils of their rank that were excellent in their performance. However, every school won one or more first places. Every teacher was a director of some event. Mrs. Savelle Phillips of the Whiterock School was the director of number sense. Mrs. Ruth Bates was director of Spelling, Brownsville School, Denison; Mrs. Annie Bell Spencer was director of music, Bethel Bells School; J.L. Huckaby was county director; and Mrs. Florence Huckaby served as secretary of Interscholastic League.
