E. T. Hardeman

Ex-Terrell Principal Dies at 69

E.T. Hardeman, veteran civic leader and former principal and head football coach at Terrell High School, died at a local hospital Saturday at 6:35 p.m. following a lengthy illness.  Services are pending at Smith Memorial Chapel.
The 69-year-old Hardeman, of 401 W. Elm, was one of the winningest coaches in Denison school history, guiding the Terrell Dragons to two state championships and another co-title.  He resigned that position in 1954 to become Principal at Terrell, which was changed to a middle school in 1968, the year he retired.
Following retirement, he continued to be active in local civic projects.  He received the Boy Scouts' Silver Beaver award in 1965 and was named the Down Payment, Inc. "Man of the Year" in 1970.  DPI was an organization aimed at creating a better understanding in race relations in the community.
Hardeman came to Denison in 1938 from Bay City, where he was an instructor in the schools there.  He served as President of the North Texas Athletic Conference in 1941 and the President of the North Texas Teachers Association in 1957.
He had been active as a membr of the Denison Chamber of Commerce, Denison Cancer Association, and served as treasurer of the Friends of the Denison  Library.  In 1972 he was named Chairman of the Board of the recreational Council of the Jack and Jill Day Care Center on Washington street.
