Sunflower School was located 3.5 miles northeast of Southmayd.  The school was a one-room building with one teacher teaching grades 1-7 for six months of the year.

On Sunday, the building was used by the Church of Christ members.

About 1916, the older students had earned the reputation of being ablve to run off teachers during the school term.   Ola Mae Belcher was hired in 1916 and the tables turned on the students.  She managed to complete the entire school term.  Again in 1917, Winnie Minnis was hired at the age of 18.  All the 7th graders were older than she but she also completed the school term.  Mrs. Thornton "stayed" throughout the 1918 - 1919 school term.

Mr. Minnis or his son would take Winnie from their home in Sadler to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hardy who lived in the Sunflower Community on Sunday evening.  He would return for her on Friday evening. Mrs. Hardy took a hot lunch to the teacher each day.

During this time period there were seven trustees: Mr. Hardy, Frank Miller, Lee Gibbons and his brother.  Families in the Sunflower Community were the Dukes, Razors, Halls and Crows, etc.

A storm cellar was built in the 1920s. The Sunflower School consolidated with Southmayd.
