Stiff Chapel School was located six miles east of Tioga just past the Mt. Carmel church and down Scoggins Road about two miles. It was a small country school located in the far south east corner of Grayson County. The school building was on the Baughman farm, about 1/4 mile from the Baughman home. The building was twenty feet by thirty feet. Grades 1 through 8 attended the one-room
school. The older students helped the younger students with their
studies. There was a coat closet where students put their coats
and lunches in; there was also a library about the same size as the
coat closet. Wooden desks with metal runners were screwed to the floor. There were two sets of desks with aisles between the rows and along each side of the rows. It was a student's responsibility to clean the big blackboard each day. There were pull-down maps on the wall. There was a drinking fountain but no running water. The water for the drinking fountain was from Clarence and Minnie Baker's house. The school had a big pot-bellied, coal-burning stove. Students were assigned to bring coal into the school building for the next day and to empty the ashes from that day's fire. There were two out-door toilets - one for the girls and one for the boys. The Stiff Chapel School was consolidated with Tioga ISD in 1947.
