The Sunday Gazetteer June 16, 1895 St. Xavier's Academy Commencement Exercises Attendant Upon the Closing of the School. Thursday evening, June 13, a thousand to 1,500 people gathered at the Eppstein opera house to witness the exercises attendant upon the closing of the term of 1894-1895 of the St. Xavier's academy. Heavy dark clouds hung around the horizon to the south, west and north, and ever and anon flashes of lightning followed by roaring of distant thunder, gave warning of a storm, but this only delayed the opening of the program - it did not deter friends and patrons of the school from coming out en mass. It was announced that the exercises would begin at 8, but it was probably 8:30 o'clock before the curtain was lifted for the first time. The entire school participated in the opening hymn, and pretty, indeed, was the picture. The girls were dressed in snow white toilets, and their arrangement on the stage was with reference to their height. When the song and the salutations had been finished the march from the stage was made tuned to music and in single file, and was one among the prettiest features of the evening. The scene of the 10 virgins, together with prologue, was striking presentation of St. Matthew's ideal heaven. The rendition of each number on the programme is well deserving of especial mention, but the want of space renders the pleasant duty an impossibility. Before closing, however, we do wish to pay tribute to the children who gave the ring exercises. Their drilling captured the house. The school will reopen the second Monday in September.
