The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, June 28, 1891 pg. 4 ST. XAVIER COMMENCEMENT Thursday evening the annual commencement of St. Xavier was held at the academy building on Sears Street under the direction of the Sisters of of St. Mary. On this as well as on former occasions the crowd seeking admittance was much larger than the capacity of the hall, and all standing room in and around the doors and windows was occupied. Excellent order was preserved and the program, as printed, was rendered in a most gratifying manner. A neatly constructed and handsomely decorated stage filled the east end of the hall. The lights were brilliant, and as all the children wore toilets of pure white with gold ornaments the scene presented was truly beautiful. With the Sisters, however, appearance is not the object desired, only as an auxiliary to reflect the real purpose of the school and merit of its system of training as well as to show the progress of its pupils. Despite the crowded room and excessive heat the audience gave a most patient and respectful hearing. The children gave distinct articulation and the visitors in the rear of the building could hear and appreciate as well as those in the front. Although the enrollment this season is as large, if not larger than average, academical degree was passed upon but one pupil, Miss Winnie Cook, daughter of Judge J.M. Cook. The opening exercises began at 8, closing at 10. Following is the program: March Heroique, Sixteen Hands - Schubert: Misses James, Rennie, Chiles, Molett, Foley, Howe, Conrad and L.
