St. Mary's to add 6th grade in fall
by Kathy Williams, Staff Writer This is the last year St. Mary's School in Sherman, affiliated with the Catholic Church, will have a 5th grade graduating class. Next year, the parochial school which opened its doors 106 years ago, will expand its curriculum to include a 6th grade. The majority of the 5th grade class has distinguished itself this year by qualifying to receive the President's Academic Fitness Award. All but 5 members of the 21-student class will receive the certificate. To qualify for the award, a student must have attained a B-plus average or equivalent, accumulated in elementary school, including the first semester of the exit grade at this level; and, the student must have received a recent score placing that pupil within the 80th percentile on any nationally recognized standardized achievement test battery. The 2 highest ranking members of the 5th grade class at St. Mary's are Darby Fitzpatrick, who ranked in the 97th percentile; and Jennifer Colvin, who ranked in the 96th percentile. Other members of the class who will receive certificates are: Lee Blanton, Monica Dell, Will Essin, Trey Freels, Nicholas Good, Joshua Gray, Mathew Grynwald, Robert Jackson, Brian Munson, Lilli Smith, Jeff Stoy, Amy Taylor, Lisa Temple, Chris Tsakopulos, according to Sister Alice, principal of the school. Peggy Kavanagh, a supporter of St. Mary's, said that a benefit, in the form of a champagne buffet, will be held Monday from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Nunon of Denison. Mrs. Kavanagh said, "In order to be able to expand the number of grades served by St. Mary's and, at the same time, to continue to offer admission at affordable tuition costs, we are attempting to raise enough funds to buy specialized classroom equipment that will be needed by the 6th grade students." The representative of St. Mary's said that these funds are being raised through avenues other than tuition increases "so that St. Mary's School will continue to be an option for all members of the Grayson County Community." According to hostess, Sharon Munson, "response from those accepting the invitation has been overwhelming and quite exciting." Co-sponsors for the event are Mr. and Mrs. John Munson, Mr. and Mrs. Rich Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Don Flanary, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Harvey, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Jackson and Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Kavanagh. Mrs. Kavanagh said, "St. Mary's School's 106 years of service is measure, not only in absolute academic terms, but also in an impressive legacy or total-person developing influences created by balancing academic achievement with spiritual awareness and a disciplined orderly scheme of education.
