In 1870, John C. D. Blackburn sold land on Mulberry to the Sherman Male and Female Academy.  Trustees were: George
C. Dugan, J. C. Richards, J. B. Stinson and J. D. Woods.  The building was two-story.  The lower floor had two class rooms in front and a large study hall behind them.  On the second floor, there were three class rooms where the younger children were taught.  There was a four acre campus.

J. C. Parks, from St. Louis, was secured as the first president.  Other teachers were Captain LeTellier, Mrs. Butler, Miss Young. The following year the Sherman Male and Female Academy became a "Female Academy".  At this time, Capt. Letellier opened his school for boys, known as the Sherman Private School or "the Cap'n's."
