I remember when...
Texas Centennial Pageant Recalled
by Josephine Pate
423 W. Texas, Denison

I am a native Texas...In May 1936, I was a student at Raynal Elementary School in Denison, Mrs. Anna Mosse was our teacher and the emphasis that year was on Texas history.  Texas was celebrating its 100th birthday and it was decided that all Denison school children would participate in a Centennial pageant to be held in Munson Stadium.
Many weeks of preparation and rehearsals were held under the direction of Mrs. Bess Coppin, principal of Peabody School.  Many other teachers were involved in teaching us about Texas and the six flags of each nation that had ruled Texas.
On the night of May 15, 1936, 750 students dressed in colorful costumes made by parents and teachers, assembled in the stadium to present our "Centennial Salute to Texas."  The name of the pageant was "The Prairie Trail."
A parade of the performers came first with six flag bearers in costumes of each nation that had ruled Texas.  On the field were replicas of the Alamo, a French fort, covered wagons and many Indian teepees."  The band played and we sang several songs about Texas.
There were six episodes: The Indian Era, the Spanish Colonization, French, Mexican and Republic of Texas Plantation Life.
The one of the students dressed as Uncle Sam came on the field and welcomed Texas into statehood....
