Sherman
was still a pioneer village in 1866. Public Schools were unknown
and unheard of. But, in that same year, about sixty-three years
ago, a certain Professor Woods appeared in Sherman. One of the
first things he did was to open a private school here. It was held in a
small frame house about where our present Carnegie Library is.
His school was famous for it's backless wooden benches which were
used as seats. It was a common sight to see the girls in pink and blue
aprons and the barefooted boys sitting there with their books and
slates lying on the benches beside them. All of the students of
Professor Woods were very young and his tiny school was of brief
duration.
