The
seven-member school board was considering two applicants - Allie Rich,
mother of three small children and a husband struggling to pay for
their farm, and a lady with no children. Only six board members
were present on teacher election night. The vote was spilt 3 to
3. With the toss of a coin, Allie Rich got the job. The
board informed her that they were not interested in her children's
faces being kept clean as much as they were in her being at school. Even though she lived twelve miles from the school, she was there every day. On rainy days, driving to school, she would pick up students on the way. Those students that she picked up were, usually, the only ones present on bad weather days. The teacher's salary was $125 per month, but part of that had to be turned over to the district.
