Dorinda
Pierce, sister of Dr. W. H. Pierce, brought text books with her to
Kentuckytown. She used them in her classes taught in the early
1850s in individual homes.
Pilot Grove school district was established early, as it was Grico District #1. In 1934-1935, the enrollment was 114 students with four teachers. The name of the school was derived from a grove of trees used as a pilot or guide by early travelers on their way to Central and South Texas. Some families whose children attended Pilot Grove School were: Rhoad, Neatherly, Visor, Bow, Lewis, Binion, Thrift, Sloan, Jackson, Taylor, Stuteville, Valentine, Humphrey, Badgett, Tree, Hulett, Biggerstaff, Garland, Scott, Walker, Russel, St. John, Ashenhurst, McSpedden, Kaiser, Smith.
