OAK RIDGE PUBLIC SCHOOL

Quite a number of people from the city went out to Oak Ridge Wednesday evening to attend the closing exercises of the public school at that place. Oak Ridge school house is located on the Denison and Carpenters Bluff road about six miles east of Denison and probably one and one-half miles south of Red River. The location is most excellent. The house stands back from the road a short distance in a grove of forest oaks and is enclosed with a strong wire fence. The school has been in session between eight and nine months, and, judging from the deportment and appearance of the children, the excellent arrangement of the stage and the language and diction of all, the Oak Ridge school community certainly stands at the head of the list of the county school districts. Miss Susie Noe, the teacher in charge, is a daughter of Elder Noe, a Baptist minister residing near Whitewright, and the programme as rendered Wednesday evening gives ample evidence of the ability of the lady. Miss Birdie Tong, formerly of Bells, but now residing with her parents near Whitesboro, had charge of the class in music, and to her is due much of the credit for the excellent entertainment. It would require more space than the Gazeteer has at its disposal to give even a limited sketch of the program as rendered. Sufficient it is to say that the 500 to 600 auditors retained their seats and gave good attention until one o'clock and even then the program as arranged had not been fully completed. Misses Miner Weriloe and Jennie Malory secured the prizes offered to the child or children who would make the best record. The ladies mentioned were, with no exception, prompt in their attendance and had stood at the head of their respective classes throughout the entire session. As a token of their appreciation and esteem, the pupils presented each of the teachers with a handsome silver cup.
