The Whitewright Sun
Friday, November 22, 1918 pg. 4 The Negro public school of this city opened Monday morning for a six months' term. Prof. Baker is the principal in charge. He holds certificates of graduation from two of the best negro colleges of the country. There are about 40 Negro scholastics and most of them are now in attendance. Superintendent H.L. Durham was present at the opening exercises and made a very encouraging talk. We have long believed that the Negroes of Whitewright are considerably above the average of their race. They are industrious, law abiding and respectful in their business intercourse with the white people. We would in fact be glad to see some of the young Negroes of this town reach stations of prominence in the educational affairs of the colored people, and be able to contribute something worth while to their advancement.
