The Whitewright Sun
Friday, November 30, 1917 pg. 3 Mr. J.C. Fortune, superintendent of the city schools, informs us that December 3rd is the date agreed upon for the beginning of the compulsory term in the schools of Grayson county. The law requires all children, white or Negro, within the school age and under 14 to attend school for 80 consecutive days of the 1917-1918 term. As stated the compulsory attendance period begins next Monday and it becomes the duty of the teachers to consult the scholastic rolls and report the names of any children out of school after that date to the Sheriff, upon whom it is imcumbent to enforce the provisions of the law.
