Settlers from Tennessee and Virginia began
settling in the "Crosstimbers" of southeastern Cooke County in the mid
1880s.
In 1884, James Cox deeded one acre of land for a school. It was a one-room building with grades 1-7 being taught. The school building sat near the road where the new church building is now. In the 1940s, motorized vehicles became more accessible. This led to small schools being consolidated to form larger schools. In 1942 Old Burton, Lemons and Mt. Zion schools, which was located about three miles southwest of Mt. Zion and next to the Indian Creek Cemetery, consolidated to form the New Burton School. The Mr. Zion school building was torn down; the Mt. Zion church purchased the land that the school stood on. It was located southwest of Collinsville on the eastern edge of Cooke County. The school house has gone the way of others like it and disappeared behind the churning clouds of what has been called progress. Source : Reasor, Cass &
