Mounger School was located one mile east of Sandusky.  Land for the school was given by the Mounger family. The school house was built by the men of the community who bought lumber in Sherman and hauled it by wagon. There were homemade desks that accommodated three pupils, drinking water drawn from a well and rags used to erase chalk marks from the area painted black on a wall.

Having no outhouses, two areas were marked off on the creek nearby - one for boys and one for girls.

The school building burned in 1895 after the school had been in session for two weeks.

In 1900, Ed Miller taught 30 pupils for five months, receiving a salary of $40 per month. He had to furnish the wood and crayons.

In 1904, Will Plexico taught 60 pupils with each one having to furnish his/her own books.

When the pupil enrollment dropped below the required number of 13, the children were transfered to Pleasant View School in Pull Off community. These pupils were, next, transferred to Sand Springs School in the Sandusky community which later became a part of the Whitesboro School.

Other teachers remembered are:
  • Annie Hightower
  • Jno. Foster
  • Clay Kirby
