Herald Democrat Monday, August 25, 1997 By Sherman ISD Community Relations SHERMAN - At this time last year, Crutchfield Elementary School teachers and students were preparing to move back into their newly renovated building and new multi-purpose facility. This year; thanks to the generosity of many businesses and individuals, a new outdoor learning center has been added to the campus. "The contributions totaled more than $20,000," said Crutchfield principal David Parker; "We are so very appreciative of the support from the community to make this dream a reality." Work began late last spring, and is nearing the completion stage with painting and siding to be added. Picnic tables and benches will also be placed nearby. Located between the classroom wings of the building, the outdoor learning center will be utilized for classes, small assemblies and other gatherings. Among the major contributors to the project were Loe's Highport Resort, Monitor, Inc., Lattimore Materials Co., the Crutchfield PTA, Matt Key and the Boy Scout Troop #66, American Cross Tie and Walls, Payless Cashways, Folger Coffee Company, Eddie Forster Hauling Service, and Eileen Sullivan. All of the landscaping, including shrubs, trees and flowers were purchased with a grant from Region 10 called "Learn and Serve." Students were required to be involved and design the outdoor learning center, design the new school flag, and plant flowers, Parker noted. Money from the Region 10 grant was also used to purchase the school flag, the flagpole, and the bricks that were laid around the flagpole, according to Parker. Other outdoor learning centers in the Sherman ISD can be found at Fairview Elementary and at Perrin Elementary, where a garden area is being built to honor the memory of former teacher Priscilla Vandygriff.
