FLAG RAISING
A memorable occasion of the commencement of Jefferson School was the flag raising held at the school building on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, attended by a large number of the parents of pupils there and also other numerous friends of the school.
A splendid musical program was given by pupils of the various grades under the direction of Miss Fannie Gafford.  This opened with the singing of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and during the raising of the flag, the children stood at attention, then saluted the flag and sang The Star Spangled Banner.
C.P. Kidd, a pupil of the school, then thanked publicly all who had helped in securing the flag pole and putting it up, and otherwise made possible this occasion.  This was followed by concerted singing of America The Beautiful by the children.
Paul Sanders, another pupil, told interestingly of the many honors which have come in the last 20 years to pupils and former pupils of the Jefferson school.
The Texas flag was brought out, and at its display, the pupils sang "Texas," a song compsed by Frank Renard of Sherman.
The closing number of the program was a group of gymnastics by pupils, directed by Miss Lois Dunn.
The Parent-Teacher Association, through whose efforts the flag pole was made possible, thanked all firms and individuals who aided the movement in any way.
