Houston
Elementary School may owe its existence to a divorce between a Ft.
Worth woman and a member of baseball's Hall of Fame. After Sarah
Martin split from Rogers Hornsby in 1923, she married Denison attorney
Roy Finley in 1926. They lived several blocks south of Houston
School. Living with them in 1937 was their 8-year-old daughter, Sarah Jane. When city commissioners decided that year to demolish the aging school building, one plan under consideration was to close Houston Elementary permanently and disperse the students to other elementary schools. Sarah and Roy Finley spearheaded a civic group that convinced the city to erect a new building instead. Sarah served two terms in 1938-1939 as President of the Houston School PTA. Roy died in 1938, and the new building was completed the following year. The PTA under Sarah's leadership presented the school with a picture of Roy, to be hung in the school auditorium.
