The
Dixie Community, located 4 miles north of Whitesboro, was established soon after the Civil War and was called
"Theodore".
A one-room log building with split logs for benches and a huge wood fireplace was the first school in Dixie. It was located near the Perkins Cemetery. Tuition was paid for a 3 - 4 month term. A.H. Nichols was an early teacher. The "blue-back" speller and McGuffy's reader were used in the school. Town-ball was a popular game. A frame building was built on the opposite side of the road and to the north. As the community grew, the school became a three-teacher school. The Dixie School consolidated with Whitesboro in the mid-1940s.
