Denison vs. Sherman October 28, 1938 The
players are ready, the fans are ready. The seats are ready.
In fact everyone and everything, but perhaps a pair of coaches,
were ready
for the game that annually means the difference between a successful season and a failure. The answer is the Denison-Sherman battle at Munson field tonight, with the opening kickoff slated for 8 o'cloc although the field gates will be opened to spectators an hour and a half earlier - at 6:30 p.m. With the table stakes in front of them and all the blue chips down Denison's powerhouse and Sherman's unpredictable eleven took their last workouts Thursday afternoon and were in the pink of condition, with the Jackets seeking their fourth win in the last quarter century and the Bearcats attempting to prevent it. Both outfits were reported in first class condition for the yearly battle with both sides having all their men, good and bad, in find fettle for the setto that means both the continuance of a long grudge between the two schools and the possiblity of winning the district championship - if the winner tonight can get over tough opposition in Gainesville later in the season. Veterans Are Ready Denison disabled veterans, Bill Hempkins and Eugene Schleuse, both walking with limps the past week or more, were back in shape and will start. Schleuse plays his final game against the Bearcats, as does Roy McCorkle, Larry Phillips. Ed Poulter, Ed Harris, and a few substitutes who were more than likely will not be used when the coaching staff attempts to win the third time in five years. On top of all that Denison will be fighting to maintain its record of never having been defeated on Munson field. Sherman fans think differently and repots have it there is plenty of cash back of their thinking. Most of it has been matched by Jacket backers' dollars. Both outfits will feature hard running backs. Denison will give the Bearcats a glimpse of the smashing Roy McCorkle, Ed Harris and Phillips, while Sherman can boast fine runners in Emil Hatfiield, Maurice Bryso and Leon Pelly, the latter mixing a bit of passing and some good booting on the side. More than 5,000 fans were exptected to jam Munsion field in an attempted to be seated where only 4,200 seats are available. 1,750 seats were added for the game, along with reserved seat sections on Denison and Sherman sides of the field.
