SCHOOL BUILDING DAMAGED BY FIRE

Early Morning Blaze Causes $10,000
Loss At Davy Crocket Building

The Davy Crockett school building located n the South Fifth ward, on South Willow street, was badly damaged by fire at an early hour this morning.

The alarm was turned in about 4:30 o'clock, and the fire department made a quick run to the scene. Fire, which originated in the basement of the building, had found its way to the floors and walls of the school rooms, and despite the hard work of the firemen the interior of the structure was charred, and burned, the furniture ruined and damage to the estimated value of $10,000 done.

The origin of the fire is not known. The coal in the basement had been thoroughly water soaked and at 5 o'clock Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Alma Maysfield, the principal of the building, went to the basement to see if everything was all alright, there was no fire anywhere and everything was all right.

Superindent J. C. Pyle, of the city schools, stated that arrangements would be made to open the school at some other place next Monday morning, and that work of repairing the building would be begun at the earliest possible moment.

There was also a meeting of the school board this morning at which preliminary steps were taken to secure a building and reopen the school.

Two hundred and eighty-five pupils are enrolled at the Davy Crocket building.

Their school, which is the pride of the citizens of the South Fifth ward, was one of the best conducted schools in the city. The building was of brick and it was modern in every respect. The Mothers Club of the school took a great pride in putting it in the forefront and they had secured many conveniences for both teachers and pupils.

The building was erected about four years ago, at a cost of $40,000 and the furniture and paraphernalia cost several thousand more. there was insurance to the amount of $22,000 on the building and furniture.
