 Former Collinsville Lady Pirate Inducted into Hall of Fame Posted: May 26, 2014 5:52 PM CDT By Jessica Morrey, Sports Reporter www.kten.com LAKE KIOWA, TX --- Let's take a trip back in time, the year is 1956 and the Collinsville Lady Pirates are Class B state basketball champions and senior Juvean Snell is a star. "It was something that we worked very hard for that year. But it was a dream and when we accomplished that dream it was just amazing for the whole high school and the community. And we were very well supported by all the community," former Collinsville Lady Pirate, Juvean Snell said. Snell did everything she could to help the Lady Pirates win their first and only state title. Snell was honored on Saturday at the El Tropicano Hotel in San Antonio along with five others in the 2014 TABC class. Snell still holds the record for most points scored in a game at the UIL state girls basketball tournament, with 68 points in the 1956 Class B final. Snell was a four-year starter for Collinsville and was named all-state as a senior. In 1956 she led the Lady Pirates to a 36-2 record, averaging 35.6 points per game during the season and scoring 168 points in three state tournament games. Snell was honored by the UIL in 2006 on the 50th anniversary of her feat. She and her husband, Charles, have three children and six grandchildren and live in Lake Kiowa. Others inducted Saturday were Johnny Carter (coach, Kennard and Madisonville); the late Tyrone Johnson (player/coach, Austin High and Austin Anderson); Boyce Honea (coach, Houston Milby); Peggy Hosek (coach, Poth); and Wayne Dickey (coach, San Antonio Sam Houston). That set Texas State records for the individual highest score in state tournament game as well as the individual highest score in a title game. And to this day, those records have yet to be broken. "I don't like to think about it in that light of how many points I had. It was that we as a team had won a State Championship and that was the big moment," Snell said. Snell went on to have her No. 33 jersey retired at Collinsville High School in 2006 and then just a few weeks ago, she was the first female athlete from Grayson County to ever be inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame. "I was so excited that I picked up the phone to call my husband and I couldn't reach him at all. And the I tried to call each one of the three children and no one answered. So I was beside myself with excitement but it was awhile before I reached the children. They were just delighted. It was like, 'its been a long time coming Mom, you deserve it,' " Snell said. The former Lady Pirate star currently holds four Texas high school girls basketball state records and she hopes her success can influence the younger generation. "It doesn't matter whether you're playing basketball or volleyball or playing in the band...just participating in a school activity, always try to do your best," Snell said.
