Denison Press June 23, 1946 RAGSDALE RETURNS TO CENTRAL WARD Abner P. Ragsdale, former principal and coach at Central Ward School and holder of the Silver Star for action with the Marines, has accepted a position as coach and eighth grade teacher at Central Ward School, Supt. B. McDaniel announced Saturday. Mr. Ragsdale was connected with Denison schools from 1939 until 1942 when he enlisted in the Navy. A native of Denison he attended Baylor University and took his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at Austin College, Sherman. Since his return from the Navy, he has been doing graduate study at the University of Texas. Joining the Navy he was trained as a pharmacist mate a Camp Elliott, California and Bainbridge Island. He was transferred to the Fourth Marine Division and saw action in the Marshalls, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was twice wounded and received the Silver Star medal for gallantry in action. He was a chief pharmacist mate at the time of his discharge. His wife, the former Mary Latona of Denison, has been with Mr. Ragsdale in Austin where she was employed prior to his return from service.
