Both
the Church and School were named Celtic by the Disciples of the Church
of Christ - Celtic being the name and structure of the cross on which
Christ was crucified.
The schoolhouse was located on a wooded bottom between Howe and Whitemound. The woods provided plenty of fuel during the colder season. Drinking water was carried from an "everlasting" well about one quarter of a mile away. There were school programs for parents and visitors almost ever Friday afternoon. Night programs were held for observance of special occasions. There was an annual Thanksiving Service with dinner on the grounds. The table was made from wagon side boards, extending across the entire school ground, and filled with the traditional Thanksgivine dishes. There were other activies which included home demonstration clubs, canning clubs, Red Cross units, and agricultural clubs. These usually culminated into a community booth at the Red River Valley Fair in Sherman. The original school was one long room with one teachers. Some of the teachers were: Tom Smith Bob Hollingsworth Will Fulton Around 1900, the schoolhouse was remodeled into two rooms and a woman teacher was added for the smaller chldren.
