Col. Rufus Columbus Burleson Rufus
Columbus Burleson was born August 7, 1823 near Decatur, Alabama, the
son of Johnathan Burleson & Elizabeth Byrd. After his conversion in 1839, Burleson entered Nashvile University to prepare for the ministry, but ill health required him to withdraw in 1941 and while recuperating at home, he studied Greek, Hebrew and Bible History. In 1846 Burleson received his diploma from Western Theological Baptist Seminary in Covington, Kentucky. 1845 : Ordained and served three churches in Mississippi 1848 : Pastor of First Baptist Church, Houston, Texas June 1851 : Elected 2nd President of Baylor University at Independence, Texas January 3, 1853 : Wed Georgia Jenkins November 19, 1854 : Baptized Sam Houston 1861 : Burleson and the male department of Baylor move to Waco, which became Waco University 1869 : Began work with Peabody Education Fund 1886 : Baylor University merged with Waco University 1886 - 1897 : Burleson named President of the new Baylor University at Waco, Texas 1892 - 1893 : President of the Baptist General Convention of Texas Sunday Gazetteer January 10: 1892 "Col. R. C. Burleson was, at that time, the agent of the Peabody fund for Texas and through his earnest, personal labors, the city was given a generous help by the Peabody trustees. As a tribute to the memory of Mr. Rufus Burleson, his name was given to the new building in the Second Ward." Rufus Columbus Burleson died in Waco, Texas May 14, 1901, Burleson College in Greenville, Texas was named in his honor. The suburban city south of Ft. Worth, Burleson, was also named in his honor.
