Salaries for next year have not, as yet, been fixed, nor will any steps be taken in that direction until a joint conference has been held between the board and the common council.  The board of trustees, it will be remembered, have no power of taxation and have control of only such money as is placed at their disposal by the council.  Two years ago, owing to the fact that the school fund had been considerably overdrawn, all salaries in this department were materially lowered and until the conference with the council is held the board does not know how to move.  It is the unanimous desire, however, to place salaries back at the old figure as quickly as the condition of the fund will allow such action.

GRADUATE OF MARY ALLEN
One of the colored teahers selected by the School Board Thursday evening for the next schlastic year is a graduate of Mary Allen Seminary, Crockett, Texas.  The girl's name is Manda L. Shaw, and she is a relative to Rev. A.M. and J.A. Coleman of this city.  She was the Valedictorian at the graduating exercises held at the seminary on Wednesday of this week.  She attended school in Crockett 3 years and her diploma states that she had completed the elementary normal course at that school, which comprises rhetoric, general history, geometry, algebra, natural philosophy, zoology, botany, pedagogy and moral philosophy.  In addition to the course of study the diploma adds, "and has borne a good character throughout."
The Denison board certainly made a good decision.

Teachers Salaries Set for Next Year
All of the trustees were present Wednesday at a called session of the board, the object of which was to fix the salaries of employees of the public schools for next year.
Mayor Yocum, president of the board, stated that it would be impossible for the council to furnish any greater sum of money for school purposes for the next year than that of the year just closed.
The financial affairs of the city were in such a condition that any advance was entirely out of the question, and any further discussion along that line would only be absolutely useless.
The board had hoped to advance the salaries to where they were 2 years ago, but, having no control over the matter of furnishing funds for the department, it was deemed expedient to allow the salaries to remain as at present, rather than to diminish the session, which was the only avenue open to a higher scale.
Following is the apportionment of the principals and teachers together with their salaries for the session of 1894-1895:

Washington Building
Miss Dula Harris, principal, salary $60 per month
Teachers, Misses Cartwright, Dain, Robert and Wood, salaries, $53, $48, $45 and $45
