Joseph Samuel Funk to E. A. Miller, County School Superintendent

He stated that the first school building in the community was a log building built after the Civil War.  Later a second log building was constructed.

Approximately 1874 a long box house was built.  It was replaced by the large two story frame building in 1879 which was the last and most remembered building. It was erected to accommodate the fast increasing attendance of the Basin Springs Academy.

There were over one-hundred students attending in 1872 with from one to three teachers over the years.  Mr. McNeil and Mr. Davis taught in 1879.
Other teachers were Judge G. P. Webb, J. T. Ryle and Mr. Whitten. Around 1879, J. C. F. Kyeger was employed as principal. He taught at the Academy for five or six years.

School was held for ten months.  Young men and ladies came from different counties to board or live in bachelor huts which were located on the campus.

County School Board Minutes indicate that the Basin Springs School was discontinued about 1945.  Permission was granted to sell the school building in 1946.  Basin Springs consolidated with Sadler Schools and is a part of Sadler-Southmayd consolidated school district.
