Charles Carrington Scott Charles
Carrington Scott, A.M., professor of physical science, is a native of
Virginia, and an alumnus of Hampden Sidney College.
It may be said to have been the peculiar genius of Hampden Sidney throughout its 125 years of uninterrupted history, to equip men for the profession of teaching. While many of its graduates have risen to eminence in other chosen careers, notably the gospel ministry, more, it seems, have won distinction as college professors than in any other calling. Among the alumni of the past two decades few have reflected as honorably upon their alma mater as the subject of this sketch. Professor Scott's work at Austin College falls naturally in two periods, the first period of six years terminating in June, 1896, and the second commencing with the current year. The greater part of the interval of four years was spent at the John Hopkins University under the celebrated Remsen and other specialists of that greatest of American Universities. The laboratories and libraries of that great institution were judiciously employed by Professor Scott to extend his already fine knowledge of his subject, so that he comes back to Austin College to which he had formerly given several years of able service, one of the best equipped teachers in all this section.
