Sunday, September 6, 1896 SCHOOL BOARD MEETING There was a meeting of the school board Monday. Prof. Gay appeared before the board and reported that the 2 Negro teachers elected as substitutes by the board had failed in their examinations and it would be necessary to elect others. He also reported that the white substitutes elected had failed to com up for examination, and it would probably be necessary for the election of other white substitutes. President Gilbert stated that a young married lady had agreed to serve in the capacity of substitute if she was needed. Trustee Lebrecht moved that she be elected. Trustee Carroll was bitterly opposed to employing a young married woman as a substitute under any circumstances, saying that the employment of one in that position now would mean opening the gates to all married women to the schools in furute, and he did not want the board to set a precedent. He was especially opposed to young married women, and on his opposition the motion was withdrawn and Prof. Gay left to his own discretion about the employment of substitutes. Trustee Munson, of the committee on rules, reported a set of rules for the government of the board. The rules were read by sections, slightly amended and adopted.
