The
school was established in 1894 in order to ease the need for another
state college in this section of the state. The school was
established by Professors C. L. and Noah Adair. The Adair Normal
School was opened in the building formerly used by the Carlisle Normal
School; the staff consisted of Professor Boyd (history teacher),
Professor Phillips (science teacher), and Miss Laura Parker (English
teacher). The school offered a complete college course,
commercial arts, and vocal music given at no extra cost. Students
arranged their class schedules and selected the subjects to suit
themselves.
The Adair Normal School grew until some methods of advertising and misrepresentation became known; this brought discredit on the school and its faculty. A marked decline in attendance occurred. The State discontinued the school; the building was taken over by the town of Whitesboro in 1896. The building was abandoned in 1918 when Whitesboro public schools became too large for the building.
