1896 Denison City Directory In
1897 Denison was divided into seven areas - one for each of the white
schools having grades 1-6. All the students in grades 8-11
(the
highest grade at that time) went to Washington School.
Seventh grade
students went to either Lamar School or Burleson School. The
"colored"
schools had separate boundaries. Students in northwest
Denison (north
of Main and west of Rusk) attended Anderson School. All other
students
attended Langdon School.
However, the
page below from the 1898-1899 City Directory shows that the dividing
lines for the four wards in Denison were still Rusk Avenue and Main
Street twenty-five years after
the original setting of the boundaries had occurred in May 1873.
Sometime
after the 1898-99 Sherman-Denison City Directory was published, but
before the 1903-1904 directory was published, the east-west boundary
was shifted two blocks westward from Rusk Avenue to Fannin Avenue.
The history of each ward school
is continued under the name given to it by the School Board in 1892.
