XXI Club The Denison Herald March 25, 1990 XXI CLUB HONORS ERNA KOHL WILSON Highlight of the XXI Club meeting Thursday afternoon was the celebration of club member Erna Kohl Wilson's 95th birthday. Birthday cake and punch was served and the group enjoyed visiting with Mrs. Wilson following the business meeting. Mrs. Wilson was born March 24, 1895, daugher of Capt. and Mrs. Martin Kohl, pioneer Denisonians who built the family business and home known as the Traveler's Hotel. The Kohls and Traveler's Hotel play a big part in Denison history. Well constructed in the European fashion, the business part was completed in 1893 on the street level. Later 3 family floors were added, completed in 1908, at which time Capt. and Mrs. Kohl, with their 3 daughters and one son, moved into the 17 room house. It was much later, as the Great Depression was coming on, that Capt. Kohl put up the sign, "The Traveler's Hotel," disregarding protests from his wife and one daughter still living at the home. At first their paying guests were primarily women travelers, needing overnight accomodations, referred by the depot authorities. At that time, Denison was a bustling railroad hub, and later, railroad men were put up in the 10 extra bedrooms no longer needed by the family. Mrs. Wilson's father died in 1935 and her mother died in 1959. Mrs. Wilson has fond memories of her childhood days and enjoys talking about them to her many friends. Pearl DaVault presided over the meeting with the theme "International Affairs." Mrs. DaVault led in prayer and JoEllen Fisher sang. Stella Womack presented the program. Hostesses were Velma Simpson, Virginia Rushing, Edna Morris, Myrtle Mitchell and Mrs. DaVault.
