XXI Club Denison, Texas Note:
The above is an amazing listing of many "firsts" in Denison,
presented by Mrs. Dora Swartz. However, her mention at the
beginning of her presentation to the XXI Club in 1925 that Denison was
named for "Henry Denison", instead of George Denison, is in error. About two-thirds of the way down the second column, Mrs. Swartz credits Dora Schwindman with being the first baby girl born in Denison. The "Denison 62-50-35 Years Ago" in the Denison Press edition of Tuesday, June 18, 1959 qualifies that assertion by stating that "The first girl born in Denison to graduate at one of the city's educational institutions was Miss Dora Schwendiman, one of the high school graduating class of the session just ended (June 1889)." Dora Schwendiman McLow died on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1901, at the age of 29 which means that her date of birth was on or before November 28, 1872. Texana Denison McElvaney was born November 2, 1872; apparently the two girls were very close to the same age. In the last paragraph Mrs. Swartz lists the Denison boys who died serving their country during World War I. The 17th listed in the above news article is "Fred Sneedle"; his name was misspelled. He was Frijof Nonson Snedal, born in Denison to Norwegian immigrants. He was a lineman for the Texas Power & Light Co.; city directories listed him as "Fred Snedal". He died at Camp Sheridan in Alabama on November 3, 1918, only eight days before the Armistice was declared. He is buried in Coffman-Layne Cemetery, Denison.
