members of Cannon's Masonic Lodge celebrated a centennial in
1895. The Free and Accepted Masons, a secret fraternal
organization, was an important cultural institution of Texas; the
presence of a lodge indicated a prosperous and growing community.
The Masons also established a number of schools that flourished until
the Texas public school system was organized."
