I think I have sort of pieced together the IOOF Lodge Hall story. My family owned the building that the Piggly-Wiggly Grocery store operated on Main Street for years. My grandfather, Constantine (Mack) Christman, bought property, mainly commercial property, with money he made from his bakery, the Home Steam Bakery, located at 610 and 612 West Main Street. He died when my mother was nine years old, and his wife, my grandmother, died three years later. Ironically, my mother was sent to complete her raising at the IOOF orphanage in Corsicana, Texas. This was stated in their will since the IOOF Orphanage was of superior quality to other orphanages. My grandfather had a brother, Pete Christman, who owned and operated a large dairy farm out where Tanglewood now stands. Pete had a bunch of kids, and they worked running the dairy Thus, my grandparents did not want their daughter going to her Uncle Pete and his family. As the story goes within the family, the Piggly-Wiggly building was acquired by my grandfather so that the IOOF would have a place to meet, as undoubtedly they were without a home. It was once evident that the upstairs of that building was used as a lodge meeting hall. The ornate work on the ceilings, etc., pretty well indicated that. I spoke with my brother and told my brother that the IOOF built a nice new building at 515 W. Main. He knew about the other IOOF Hall and that when the IOOF could not pay for the building, they moved out and had no place to go, thus my grandfather bought a building a couple doors down the street told them he would donate them the space on the second floor of his building for a new meeting hall, and that's how they came about being in the old Piggly Wiggly building. My grandfather was undoubtedly very involved in the IOOF and has an IOOF emblem on his gravestone, although, I don't find record that he was ever an officer or anything. Later they disbanded completely. ...Freddy Lessly I.O.O.F. History Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
