SECRET SOCIETIES

A.F. & A.M.
Lone Star Lodge, No. 403 – Was organized July 9, 1873, and worked under dispensation until June 6, 1874, when it was chartered.  The lodge is in a flourishing condition with 70 members. Their new lodge room was recently fitted up and refurnished at a cost of $90.  The following are the officers: J.B. Hewitt,  W.M.; Jno G. West, S W; Jake Henrie, J W; L Eppstein, treasurer; H. Casper, secretary; J S Johnson, S D; C.M. Kirk, J D; a Dettamore, S Steward; H.K. Kimmel, J Steard; and S Harryman, Tyler; Post Master – W.J. Jennings, Charles Cunningham, Geo J. Dexter and J.C. Field.  Regular meetings, first Tuesday in each month.

I.O.O.F.
Denison Lodge No. 161 – Chartered Feb. 22, 1873, with ten members, and now numbers about fifty.  Their new lodge room was recently furnished at an expense of $600.  Regular meeting Friday nights.  Officers – Hank Wingrove, N G: Nic Larson, V G; C.C. Shumucker, Sec; E.B. Sims, Treas; Jno Hoerr, Representative to Grand Lodge

ENCAMPMENT
Denison Encampment No. 59 – Organized in August 1874, with 8 members; now number 27.  Regular meetings first Monday in each month.  Officers – John Hoerr, Chief Patriarch; John Nevins, High Priest; N. Larson, S W; Phillip Blummer, J W; John G. Gnase, Scribe; Louis Libbie, Treas; John Hoerr, Representative to Grand Encampment.

R.R. CONDUCTORS’ Div.
Lone Star Div., No. 53, Order Ry’ Conductors – Organized March 10, 1877, at Corsicana; 9 charter members.  Transferred to Denison, Sept. 1877.  Mets first and third Sunday’s in each month.  Officers – J.R. Wright, C C; C.A. Warner, A C C; W.C. Morrill, Sec’y; Present membership, 28.

UNITED WORKING MEN
Denison Lodge No. 8, A.O.U.W. – Organized Nov. 25, 1879, with 12 members; present membership, 20.  Meets every Tuesday night.  Officers – M.J. Fitzgerald, P M W; Robert Gorbutt, M W; Robert Aniol, Foreman; Andrew J. Williams, Overseer; Robert Guthrie, Recorder; B.N. Carter, Receiver; Mahl C. Husted, Financier; Thomas Canniford, Guide; James Pennington, J W; Wm Perkins, O W; M.J. Fitzgerald, Robert Aniol and J.R. Murphy, Trustees.  Tuesday night, Dec. 31st three delegates were appointed to go to Marshall, Tex., Jan. 23d. for the purpose of organizing a Grand Lodge for the state of Texas.  Delegates – A.J. Williams, M.C. Husted and Joseph Kalfus.

KNIGHTS OF HONOR
Denison Lodge, No. 1571 – Organized April 18, 1879, with a membership of 25; present membership, 36.  Meet every Friday night, in Pettigrew hall.  Officers – H.H. Hall, past dictator; J.M. Sheeder, dictator; W.F. Bennett, vice dictator; J.M. Hill, assistant dictator; E. Spencer, reporter; A.H. Coffin, financial reporter; J.D. Woodyard, treasurer; W.C. Tignor, chaplain; M.H. Sheeder, guide; W.W. Saulsbury, guardian; J.A. Malcomb, sentinel and medical examiner.

ORDER OF PROTECTION
Denison Lodge, No. 160 – Organized April 18, 1879.  Present membership, 24.  Officers – M.H. Sherburne, Protector; Mrs. M.A. Sherburne, vice-Protector; Mrs. Bettie Bennett, Guide; J.A. Malcolm, Sec’y; W.F. Bennett, Financial Sec’y; J.M. Sheeder, Treasurer; W.C. Tignor, Chaplain.

Denison Hebrew Benevolent Association – Organized Sept. 15, 1878.  Membership, 25.  Officers – L. Eppstein, President; H. Casper, vice-President; B.A. Cook, Sec’y; M. Kuehn, Treas; M. Grundstein, S. Kaufman and E. Jacobs, Trustees.

Myrtle Lodge Knights of Pythias, No. 22 – Organized about two years ago; is in a flourishing condition.  Officers – J.M. Sheeder, C C; F.N. Robertson, N C; H.C. Hathaway, P Chancellor; Representatives to Grand Lodge, H.C. Wingrove, T.B. Hanna.  Meet every Tuesday night at I O of O F Hall.
Endowment Tank, Section 330 – Organized Aug. 1879, with 18 members.  Present membership, 25.  Meet first Saturday night in each month at Odd Fellows Hall.  Officers – F.N. Robertson, President; T.B. Hanna – vice-President; J.O. Williams, Chaplain; J.M. Sheeder, Sec’y and Treas; Alpheus T. Budlong, Guide; J.K. Daughters, Guardian; Sam Proud, Sentinel; T.B. Hanna and J.O. Crystal Spring Lodge, No. 190 – Organized May 8, 1874.  Membership, 55.  Meet Monday nights.  Officers – H.C.
