July 25, 1972 Virginia Point Church Focal Point of Much Area History One of the oldest churches in this part of the country is the Virginia Point Methodist Church between Ambrose and Bells. The 135th anniversary of the history-laden church and cemetery will be celebrated in July. The church continues as a center of the community with a recreational building and other facilities added that were never dreamed of during its early years. Rev. Lawrence Smith of Sherman is the pastor. Assisting with Sunday Services is Jim Williams of Whitewright, a nephew of Rev. Ed Williams wh owas Virginia Point pastor many years ago. In 1971-1972 roster showed these members of the church administrative board, James W. Fleming, Troy Giles, Neal Gilliam, Eutah Jennings, Irene Templeton, Pat Templeton, John Pirtle, Bill Youree, and Joe Youree. A Virginia Point Cemetery Endowment Fund is maintained at the First National Bank at Bells to receive donations for the maintenance of the burial ground where many of the area's pioneers rest.... This building completed in 1860 is the same church being used today. Although some additions have been made, foundation and the basic structure are the same. A recent report listed Mrs. Alice Amos, now 90, as the oldest member of the congregation....
