VIRGINIA POINT METHODIST CHURCH IS 1929 YEARS OLD
Bells - Among the oldest churches in Texas and the oldest in Grayson County is the Virginia Point Methodist Church, 4 miles north of Bells.  Sunday the church is celebrating its 129th birthday with a homecoming and sack dinner.  It was founded in 1837.
It had its beginning when 12 or 14 pioneers with 100 slaves left Virginia and moved west.  They settled in the areas which became known as Virginia Point.
After the church was built in 1837, it burned.  It was moved to a new location donated by Andy B. Youree on a 2-acre plot.  His descendants are still active in the church.
This church building was finished in 1860, and is the same church building used today.  Some additions have been made such as an educational building moved to Virginia Point a few years ago.
There are 50 members of the church and the oldest living members if Mrs. A.T. Templeton, Sr. at 96 who lives in Shreveport, Louisiana.  The oldest living member in the community is Mrs. Alice Amons, who is 84 years old.
Rev. W.S. Collins pastors the church and also served the Bells and Savoy Methodist churches.  Services are held at Virginia Point the first and third Sundays of each month.
